I met this man in Harvard Square. His name is George. He has been homeless off and on for about 10 years now.
I don't believe I ever asked him a question....We just kind of started talking. We chatted for over ten minutes, so I included a snippet of my favorite thing that he said.
"And every [organization] has said to me 'Oh you do have drug and alcohol problems?' No I don't! But they want me to say I have drug and alcohol problems. And they all say, 'Well we can help you quicker or faster.' Oh so lie about it? Lie about my life and lie about who I am ya'know? And lie about the fact that I don't have drug and alcohol problems so I can appease them? No! I don't do that"
"Why do you think that there's so much focus on that?"
"I have no idea...because probably it's rampant in society today."
After speaking with him, I gave him a hat and gloves that I had brought along. He was very grateful for the warmth.
