Since this is the first day of the semester, I am going to post a portrait of the day from now until hopefully the end of the school year! Although this is a lot of work, I am excited to see the connections that I make with all of the unique and interesting people that I meet.
I have had a lot of success with this project at gas stations. It makes sense. Everybody, no matter how old or how young, what race, or what personality you have, have to go to a gas station. I think that I will maybe just camp out at a gas station and take portraits all day long. With nightfall fast approaching, I reached out to the first person I saw. I never caught his name, but he certainly opened up to me. The question I asked, “What makes you the happiest in life?” may seem simple to some people, but to others, it is very personal. When I ask this question, I have no idea what sort of answer I am going to get. However, his answer was probably the most interesting answer I have heard so far. He said that getting to see his son was what made him the happiest. After going through a recent divorce, he is finally getting to have single visits with his son. This time he spent with his son was so important to him because it was time alone that he could bond with his son, without having the son's mother around. Hearing things like this puts things in perspective for me. While some people would be happiest going skydiving, or maybe snowboarding in the Alps, he is happiest just getting to spend time with his son. The purity, the simplicity of this is what makes this portrait so special to me. Often we take for granted the time we spend with family and friends, however this luxury of getting to see them whenever we want is not the case with everybody.
